How to write a good adventure story? by G. FIMENEZ - ESPAGNE

Writing a good adventure story is not an easy thing, especially considering how diverse the genre can be (what if what I understand as an adventure novel is not the same as you?). Within the ancient adventure genre itself there are several subcategories. We have the travel novel (going around the world in eighty days), the exploration novel (trip to the center of the earth) or even mixtures of both. There are also more action plays (Indiana Jones).

It is impossible to give advice that is valid for all kinds of adventure works, so the first tip to write a good adventure work is to be inspired by those adventure works that you like and think are good. If you love stories like Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider, or Uncharted, examine what those stories have in common, and what you're passionate about about them. It is not about regurgitating a hodgepodge of clichés, but about finding out what they make you feel and how they do it, so that you can make it feel to other people when they read your work.

So, step number 1: Research your gender. Soak up the kind of stories you like, review them, study them, and understand what makes them special to you. That's what you have to inspire your readers.

Now, let's look at some general advice, and then gender-specific tips:

1. An adventure novel has to be exciting.

What all the stories do have in common is that they are exciting. There are two very different emotions that are often evoked in adventure novels: One is wonder or wonder; and the other is tension or adrenaline.

The wonder usually occurs in those of travel and exploration, and the adrenaline in those of action and adventure as such, although many usually have a little of both. The golden temple with gigantic vaults full of colorful lights is amazing, but as soon as the floor begins to fill with flammable pitch, the tension increases.

A third emotion can be curiosity. Strange and unknown worlds are the basis of adventure novels, because people want to know.

2. An adventure novel has to control the pace very well

Exciting stories usually catch you because they have a good rhythm, and they are read well. In the specific case of adventure novels, a fairly simple structure is usually followed: A disruptive element is presented (say, an amphora from an unknown culture), you have a moment of brief calm before the storm (our researcher of ancient Greek cultures can study it a little) and this is interrupted by an antagonistic action, either of a character (the evil art thief) or of the environment (they have activated a trap and the temple is going to fall apart). There is a moment of high tension, such as an escape or a chase, and after the climax it turns to a little calm (you can study the amphora calmly, you have a fun conversation with your little assistant).
