How to write a novel? – 1.1 – Previous ideas by G. JIMENEZ - SPAIN

Stories have a core. You can't write a story about anything. That core is ideas, and if you want to write you probably have a lot of them. Thousands, small fragments, seeds, characters, worlds, etc.

Before writing a novel you need the ideas, and therefore before talking about how to write a novel, you have to talk about the ideas.

One of the myths that exist is that there are good ideas and bad ideas. There are many people wary of having their big ideas stolen. But ideas, in reality, are worthless on their own. That invented language dictionary or that encyclopedia of your world is useless if you don't have a place to apply it. But let's not get ahead of ourselves.

To write a story you need ideas. I'm sure there are quite a few people who think "I want to write a story, but I don't know what".

How are ideas achieved? In many cases there is no problem, because the activity of our brain generates random information that sometimes "comes to mind". One day you wake up and want to make a world dominated by ducks. You walk the dog and you get the idea of some short gentlemen going to throw a ring at the volcano. This is very common.

When I asked what things some people would want to say to their younger versions, Virginia Buedo told me: "Write everything down. Then these things are forgotten." Ideas that come to us like this at random are often forgotten. Many times we believe that we will remember those things without writing them down. I, too, have fallen into that error. If you need ideas, or come up with a good idea you needed, write it down. It doesn't hurt, it's fast, and you avoid upsets.

But there are people who have a hard time finding ideas. If ideas don't come to mind, don't despair. There are people in your same situation, and tools have been developed for it. One of the most used is a generator of random ideas. You can use a website that generates nouns or adjectives, word lists, or the famous story cubes. If you don't like the idea, try again.

But it's not the only way to generate ideas. Incredibly, you can't create something out of thin air, and ideas always come from somewhere. This process of generating new ideas is something unconscious, but it can be done consciously if we follow a specific process.

and I recommend taking a look at it to make this clearer, but here I am going to summarize the four ways to get new ideas. All of them require prior ideas.

  1. Develop an existing idea

  2. Develop an idea outside of its usual context

  3. Develop an idea in an unconventional way

  4. Mixing two ideas

Developing an existing idea is a very easy thing. It is to create on a foundation, to explore what has not been explored over an idea that already exists. Expanded universes are a good example of this, the Star Wars expanded universe are stories of things that are not explored in the movies, for example. Or new installments in the saga, such as the new trilogy, are to develop an existing idea.
